最重要的例子，就是美國前總統雷根，他在1970年代擔任加州州長期間，多次來台訪問。但是，台、美、陸三邊關係中，對台灣傷害最大的《八一七公報》，卻是在雷根任內所簽下的。美國在《八一七公報》中承諾，將逐漸減少對台軍售，對台灣出售的武器，也不能超過中美建交後幾年的水準。
雖然川普熱情的接了這通電話，但許多專家學者認為，蔡政府不可因此太過高興，以為川普日後還會這樣挺台灣，因為過去的幾個例子，都顯示出以美國利益為優先的立場上，即便是美國總統的承諾，也可能會跳票，甚至有兩面手法。

另外，美國前總統尼克森曾經訪問台灣7次，不過，卻也是他決定要推動美中關係正常化。顯見，美國屢次在與台灣關係最好的時刻，反手與大陸做了更大一筆交易。
